QUEEN
There is a willow grows aslant a brook,
That shows his hoar leaves in the glassy stream;
There with fantastic garlands did she come
Of crow-flowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples
That liberal shepherds give a grosser name,
But our cold maids do dead men's fingers call them:
There, on the pendent boughs her coronet weeds
Clambering to hang, an envious sliver broke;
When down her weedy trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide;
And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up:
Which time she chanted snatches of old tunes;
As one incapable of her own distress,
Or like a creature native and indued
Unto that element: but long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

王妃
柳の木が一本、小川のうえに差しかかって、
白い葉裏を流れの鏡に映しているところ。
あの娘は柳の葉を使って、きんぽうげ、いらくさ、ひなぎく、
それに口さがない羊飼いたちが淫らな名で呼び、
清純な乙女たちは死人の指と呼んでいる紫蘭をそえて、
きれいな花環を上手につくり、その花の冠を枝垂しだれた枝に
掛けようと、よじ登った途端、枝は情つれなく折れて、
形見の花環もろとも、哀れにむせぶ小川に落ちました。
裳裾はひろがり、しばらくは人魚のように川面をただよいながら、
古い賛美歌を口ずさんでいたといいます。
身に迫る危険も知らぬげに、
水に生まれ水に馴れ親しんだ生物いきもののように。
でも、それも束の間、裳裾はたっぷり水を吸い、
あのかわいそうな娘を美しい歌声から引き離して、
川底の泥のなかに引きずりこんでしまったのです。
